Pro Tips for Performance Bolt-Ons

Part of being a powersports enthusiast and equipment owner for many, is customization and performance upgrades. All to often, however, these upgrades don't end up being an upgrade for a few different reasons.

The most common performance bolt-ons are exhuasts and air filter upgrades. Often times these are installed with little or no knowledge of how they effect engine performance and can result in reduced performance or even engine damage.

Gaining power and performance with these parts is all about incresing the amount of fuel and air that can flow into the cylinder. The thing is this has to be done in a balanced way. Changes in either air or exhuast flow must be proportionately compensated for in changes with fuel flow.

Engines must maintain an optimum air-fuel ratio to run smoothly, reliably, and perform at their peak.

Also, these increases in flow must be proportionate with each other because if there is a restriction in either component the flow can not exceed that restriction. These bolt-on components are often further limited by the amount of flow that a cylinder head is capable of and cylinder head flow must be in proportion with the general displacement of the cylinder.

There is a lot of math, science, and knowledge that go into performance upgrades beyond simply bolting them on. So keep this in mind when adding performance parts to your equipment or contact Precision Performance for a consultation or professional installation.
